I thought ‘retraining’ one’s staff was just a PC way of throwing all your money at them. I have actually been extremely surprised by the effects of providing vocational qualifications for employees. I have noticed a significant change in attitudes of staff studying to obtain NVQ qualifications. It’s given them a fresh zest for their role and a desire to progress, which in turn has been an incredibly healthy boost for the business.
I was initially afraid that extra training in subjects that veered slightly off the nature of their roles would be counterproductive. To the contrary, it’s clear that enabling employees to pursue new ventures allows the business to strengthen and develop as well. Additionally, the respect gained from employees that are pursuing various NVQ qualifications is significantly noticeable. In other words, giving to them, inevitably means they give back to you. I highly recommend it.
